Job Description :

As the Head of Commercial Real Estate Portfolio Management, this position is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of commercial real estate lending and portfolio management. This job plays a critical role in developing and implementing strategic plans to achieve lending goals, optimize the profitability of the commercial real estate loan portfolio, and maintain risk management processes and controls necessary to safely conduct commercial lending. This senior leadership position requires exceptional expertise in commercial real estate lending, strong financial acumen, and excellent leadership and communication skills.





Individuals in this role are responsible for the following:



•       Manage a commercial real estate portfolio of $2B.



•       Lead and supervise a team of lending officers, underwriters, analysts, and support staff to ensure effective management of the commercial real estate lending and portfolio management functions.



•       Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve lending objectives, including loan growth, profitability, and risk management.



•        Oversee the origination, underwriting, and closing processes for commercial real estate loans, ensuring adherence to bank policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.



•        Oversee the evaluation and process for loan applications and detailed credit analysis to assess the financial strength, collateral value, and repayment capacity of borrowers.



•        Develop and maintain relationships with borrowers, real estate developers, brokers, and other industry professionals to generate new business opportunities and expand the credit union’s organic commercial real estate loan portfolio.



•         Monitor and manage the performance of the commercial real estate loan portfolio through a credit risk rating system, including loan delinquencies, non-performing assets, and credit quality.



•       Proactively respond to Compliance, Legal, Internal Audit and External Regulatory Support teams as appropriate.



•       Develop and implement risk management strategies in partnership with the second and third line of defense to mitigate credit, market and operations risks associated with the commercial real estate loan origination and portfolio.



•       Stay updated on market trends, regulatory changes, and industry best practices to include but not limited to Loan Loss Reserves, CECL Methodology and Risk Management Three Lines of Defense to ensure compliance and drive innovation in commercial real estate lending and portfolio management.



•       Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including senior management, credit risk management, legal, and loan servicing teams, to optimize the overall performance and profitability of the commercial real estate lending business.



•       Prepare and present reports and updates on portfolio performance, risk assessment, and compliance to senior management, Board of Directors and relevant stakeholders.



•       Will be an integral member of related governance teams, lead the loan review committee, and serve in a voting capacity on several related management committees.



•       Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, nurturing talent and providing guidance for professional development within the team and across the credit union.



•       Helps safeguard computer and IT systems by monitoring staff adherence of all security policies and related training for individuals managed by this role. Takes appropriate action working with IT Security and HR when necessary to address any security breaches.



•        Develop and implement strategies to enhance the value and profitability of distressed assets, including analyzing market trends, conducting due diligence, and identifying potential repositioning or disposition opportunities.



•       Collaborate with stakeholders to evaluate potential risks and develop risk mitigation strategies.



•       Negotiate complex transactions, including loan restructurings, refinancing, and asset sales.



•       Provide regular reports and updates to senior management and stakeholders on the performance and progress of troubled assets.



•       Stay current with regulatory and legal requirements related to distressed real estate assets.



•       Helps safeguard computer and IT systems by monitoring staff adherence of all security policies and related training for individuals managed by this role. Takes appropriate action working with IT Security and HR when necessary to address any security breaches.





 Education and Experience



•       Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Administration, or related field. MBA preferred.



•       Minimum 20 years of progressive leadership experience with a minimum of 5 years at the VP level and extensive (at least 10 years) commercial real estate lending and portfolio management experience, preferably within a large bank.



•       Deep knowledge of commercial real estate markets, lending practices, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.



•       Strong financial acumen, with the ability to analyze complex financial data, assess creditworthiness, and make informed lending decisions.


•       Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a high-performing team.



•     Exceptional communication and presentation skills to effectively convey complex information to the Executive Team, Board of Directors and, internal and external stakeholders at all levels across the organization.



•     Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills to collaborate with borrowers, real estate developers, and industry professionals.



•      Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while successfully handling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.



•      Thorough and up to date understanding of regulatory compliance requirements related to commercial real estate lending.



•       Professional certifications such as CCIM, CFA, or similar are highly desirable.
